1. Proof of Concept

If you want to publish a medical textbook, please proceed as follows:

A. Prepare your Word document

1. Download a template Word file for a 6 x 9 inch textbook ( www.freemedicalinformation.com/tools/book1.doc).
2. Open the file and be careful not to delete any of the double horizontal lines in the document; they contain information about page number and page headings.
   
3. Replace <Editor>, <Title>, <Publisher> with the names of your project. Add the editor's address, write two sentences of the foreword and add two potential contributing authors.
4. Insert your manuscripts or any other text under the main chapter headings (Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, etc). Select the layout view to check the document. Go back to normal view and make changes where needed.
5. Copy text into additional chapters until you get a document of at least 80 pages (for a test document, see www.freemedicalinformation.com/tools/book2.doc)
6. Click anywhere in the "Contents" (on page 9 in the original document) with the right-hand mouse key. From the menu which appears, select "update fields" and in the next window "create new folder".

7. Open www.lulu.com and sign up for a free account. (You may close the account after the exercise.)
8. Log in.
9. Select "Publish". Then click on " Start a New Project ->Paperback Book" and insert Title, Author, Category, and Language. Click on "Save & Continue".

10. Upload your Word document. After a few moments, you will be asked to select the size of your book - choose 6 x 9 inches and click on "Save & Continue".
11. Now Lulu will transform your Word file into a PDF file. Preview the print-ready PDF, then click on "Approve and Continue".
12. At "BINDING & COLORS" select "Black and white pages (with color covers)" and "Perfect-bound (paperback)". Click on "Save & Continue".
13. At "COVER ART", define the cover of your textbook.
14. Finally, at "PRICE & FINISH", choose "Available only to me (Published)" and click on "Complete publish".

You have successfully published a book in less than 30 minutes. You may now delete it or close the Lulu account altogether.
